Essay Introduction- I remember when
I remember when…
This essay is about memory and how
memories have inspired photographers and artists to do what they do today. About
a month ago, after a clear out at mum’s house, I came across many family
albums, and found so many photos of me and my sister growing up. Day trips
places and holidays we went on. After looking through these photographs, it
inspired me to do my project on memories, and the recreation of these memories.
Events artists may have witnessed or experienced through childhood can affect
how they show it in their work. Every memory is an experience which can be
either good or bad. Memories have inspired and influenced a variety of
different artists to express their emotions and past through their artwork, it
can be a way of escaping bad memories or revisiting good ones. I have begun by
looking at Taryn Simon and her “the innocents” project, recreating scenes of
people being accused of crimes they did not commit. And also Steve Pyke who
photographed his two sons Jack and Duncan over a few years, capturing memories
of them growing up.
Project prosopal
For my photography final major
project, I am going to produce a visual documentation of people, places and
objects that have sentimental value to me. They could be, childhood memories,
childhood days out, family members, other loved ones or sentimental objects.
And also, maybe recreate photos that hold a lot of memories in them.
I am going to photograph these by
using a variety of photographic techniques, including shutter speeds, aperture
and lighting, I will record these settings in my book. I will also be using
experimental techniques to show a variety of different techniques in my
progression. Techniques such as HDR, levitation and cyanotypes. I am using
these techniques not only to show progression but to also improve my skills.
I will display my research, shoots,
and shoot evaluations in my sketch book. And for each shoot, I will pick out my
favourite image and write a small essay about how this photo displays a memory.
For my final images and their essays I will present them in a separate book.
Research for my project will include
appropriate places and why they are relevant, visits to places, photos,
relevant photographers and their relevant projects, and maybe a few artists
too. I think my final piece will be suitable for a gallery to be viewed by
other people who have an interest in documentation.
